Maintenance & FAQs

Q: What types of batteries can the HM3980 test?

A:The HM3980 is primarily designed for rechargeable batteries, including:

Lithium-ion (Li-Ion): Including LCO, LFP (LiFePO₄), NMC, etc.

Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH)

Lead-acid batteries: Including SLA (Sealed Lead-Acid)

Q:  Is the HM3980 a simple charger or a diagnostic tool?

A:It is a diagnostic tool that integrates both charging and discharging functions. Its main purpose goes beyond simply charging batteries and includes high-precision measurement of battery capacity (ampere hours, Ah; watt hours, Wh), internal resistance and cycle life.

Q: What are the most critical settings to configure?

Voltage limits are the most important safety and functional settings.

Charge voltage limit: Must be correctly set according to the battery chemistry (e.g., 4.2 V for most lithium-ion batteries, 3.65 V for LFP batteries). Exceeding this limit may cause fire.

Discharge voltage limit: To prevent damage from over-discharge, a minimum safe voltage must be set (e.g., 3.0 V for lithium-ion batteries).

Q:What are the main precautions to take?

Never leave the tester unattended, especially when testing lithium batteries. There is a risk of fire.

Use the tester in a safe place: place the tester and battery on a non-combustible surface. The use of a lithium polymer battery safety bag is recommended.

Check the settings: incorrect voltage limits are the most common operating error and can be dangerous.

Monitor the temperature: touch the battery during testing to check that it is not overheating. Where possible, use an external temperature sensor.

Q:  Can I test the battery pack or only individual battery cells?

A:Provided the battery pack's voltage and current fall within the specified range of the HM3980 (please consult the specifications for your model), the battery pack can be tested. However, for safety reasons, it is strongly recommended to use a Battery Management System (BMS) for multi-cell battery packs to prevent individual cells from overcharging or over-discharging during testing.
