What is SF6 Gas Recovery Machine
The SF₆ gas recovery unit is a specialised piece of equipment designed for the treatment of SF₆ gas in electrical equipment (such as GIS, circuit breakers, ring main units and current transformers), enabling the integrated recovery, purification, drying, storage and recharging of SF₆ gas. Its primary function is to recover, purify and store the SF₆ gas contained within electrical equipment during its manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance, and to recharge the equipment with the gas when required.

Key Functions

1. SF₆ Gas Recovery
Extracts SF₆ gas from the equipment and stores it in a high-pressure liquefied state.

2. Vacuum Evacuation
Evacuates and pressurises the gas compartment to ensure insulation performance.

3. Purification and Drying
Removes moisture, oil, dust and decomposition products.

4. SF₆ Recharging
Recharges the equipment with qualified SF₆ gas.

5. Storage
Stores SF₆ in liquid or gaseous form without leakage or contamination.

Operating Principle

SF₆ Gas Recovery machine: Operating Principle
Low-temperature refrigeration + high-pressure compression → converts gaseous SF₆ into liquid SF₆ → storage → regasification and recharging

1. Evacuation
First, use a vacuum pump to create a high vacuum inside the equipment’s gas chamber and piping, removing air and moisture.

2. SF6 Gas Recovery
Extract gaseous SF6 from equipment such as GIS or circuit breakers.
Compress the gas using a compressor.
Simultaneously cool the gas via the refrigeration system.
Convert the SF6 from a gaseous to a liquid state and store it in a storage tank.

3. Purification and Drying
Pass the gas through a filter and a desiccant dryer to remove moisture, oil mist and decomposition products.

4. Recharging (Gas Filling)
When gas filling is required, the liquid SF6 is heated to vaporise it, after which it is recharged into the electrical equipment.

5. Vacuum Pumping + Pressure Holding
A vacuum is re-established prior to recharging to ensure the gas compartment remains clean and dry.

Operation Step

Step 1: Evacuation

Prior to gas recovery or charging, it is usually necessary to evacuate the main unit, connecting piping or electrical equipment to remove air and moisture.

Scope of operation: Evacuation of the unit itself (upon first use or after the unit has been exposed to atmospheric air).

1.1Valve sequence:
Open: Vacuum pump, valves V1, V2, V3, V5.
Observation: Open valve V8 to monitor the vacuum level; once the required level is reached (e.g. below 133 Pa or 30 Pa), close V8.
Close: Close all open valves and the vacuum pump in the reverse order.
Scope: Evacuating the electrical equipment.

1.2Valve sequence:
After completing the evacuation of the unit itself, close the relevant valves.
Open: Vacuum pump, valves V1 and V6 (valves connecting the equipment).
Observation: Open valve V8 to monitor the equipment’s vacuum level; close V8 once the required level is reached.
Shutdown: Valves V1, vacuum pump, V6.

Step 2: Gas Recovery

Recover the SF6 gas from the electrical equipment, purify it, and store it in liquid form in the unit’s storage tank.
Pre-cooling: If necessary, start the refrigeration system 15–30 minutes before recovery begins and monitor the thermometer until the temperature drops to approximately 10°C.

2.1Valve Sequence:
Open: Valves on the equipment side, valves V6 and V5, utilising the pressure differential to allow the gas to flow into the storage tank initially.
Once pressure has equalised, open: valve V3 and the SF6 compressor, then slowly open valve V2 to commence compressor recovery.
Monitoring: Closely monitor the compressor discharge pressure gauge (M2) to ensure it does not exceed 2.0 MPa (this can be controlled by adjusting the opening of valve V2). Simultaneously monitor the storage tank liquid level; it must not exceed two-thirds of the sight glass.
Completion: When the pressure inside the equipment drops to the final recovery pressure (e.g. 0.05 MPa or lower), close: V6, V2, the SF6 compressor, V3, and finally shut down the refrigeration system.

Step 3: Gas Charging

Recharge the purified SF6 gas from the storage tank back into the electrical equipment.
Prerequisite: Ensure that the equipment has been fully evacuated.

3.1 Valve sequence (pressure differential method, applicable when the tank pressure exceeds the required equipment pressure):
Open: The valve on the equipment side and valve V4 (charging valve); use the pressure differential to charge directly.
Monitor: Observe the pressure gauge on the equipment; once the specified operating pressure is reached, close: V4 and the valve on the equipment side.

3.2 Valve sequence (compressor method, applicable when the tank pressure is insufficient):
Open: Valve V7 (external gas source or storage tank), V2, V3, SF6 compressor, and V4.
Monitor: Continue until the required pressure is reached.
Finish: Before shutdown, recover the gas in the piping back into the storage tank via the compressor until the suction inlet pressure (M1) reaches zero gauge pressure, then close all valves.
