Transformer Oil Kinematic Viscosity Tester

Transformer Oil Kinematic Viscosity Tester

The Insulation Oil Kinematic Viscosity Tester is an automated testing device compliant with the national standard GB/T 265 - 1988. It is designed to measure the kinematic viscosity of liquid petroleum products (Newtonian fluids). Based on the principle of timing a sample’s flow through a calibrated glass capillary under constant temperature, the instrument calculates kinematic viscosity using the capillary constant. It can also determine dynamic viscosity with density data, meeting precise testing requirements in the petrochemical industry.

Product Overview

The automatic kinematic viscosimeter for petroleum products can simultaneously activate four glass capillary viscometers for kinematic viscosity measurement under the same constant temperature, and each viscosimeter can be measured four times as a set of test data. The instrument will automatically remove the timing result not meeting the tolerance according to the requirements of national standard method, and take the average of other timing values satisfying the tolerance, then calculate and obtain the kinematic viscosity value of the test. When it is unnecessary to obtain the test result (Often to roughly observe the approximate kinematic viscosity value of an unknown sample), the kinematic viscosity value can be calculated at one time, twice or three times at any time. In this case, the approximate kinematic viscosity value of test sample can be obtained in a short time. After that, when the number of times is four, the instrument will accurately obtain the value of final kinematic viscosity of tested sample according to the requirements of national standard method.

Method of Use

1. Preparations

(1)Reagent preparation:

①Petroleum ether: 60-90℃, analytical purity.

②95% ethanol: Chemically pure

(2)Sample pretreatment:

Sample contained water or mechanical impurities must be dehydrated before the test and filtered with filter paper to remove the mechanical impurities.

Lubricating oil with high viscosity can be sucked and filtered by ceramic funnel, water pump or other vacuum pump, or dewatered and filtered at the temperature of 50-100 ℃.

(3)Selection of glass capillary viscosimeter: When determining the kinematic viscosity of sample, an appropriate viscosimeter should be selected according to the temperature of the test. The flow time of sample and viscosimeter with an inner diameter of 0.4mm shall not be less than 200s and 350s, respectively.

(4)Pre-test treatment of glass capillary viscometer:

Before testing the viscosity of sample, the viscosimeter must be washed with solvent oil or petroleum ether. If the viscosimeter is contaminated with dirt, it is necessary to wash it with chromic acid wash, water, distilled water or 95% ethanol, and then dried it in an oven or blown it dry with hot air filtered through cotton.

(5)Constant temperature water bath preparation: Inject a proper amount of constant temperature liquid into water bath according to different constant temperature. (Refer to Table 1 for the type of constant temperature liquid)

Sampling: When measuring the kinematic viscosity, place the sample into a clean and dry capillary viscosimeter with the required inner diameter. Before loading the sample, cover the rubber pipe on branch 7, block the orifice of tube 6 with fingers, and then insert tube 1 into the container with sample. At this time, suck the liquid to line b by means of ear sucking ball. Do not cause bubbles and cracks in the fluids of tube body 1, expansion parts 2 and 3. When the liquid level reaches the line b, raise viscosimeter from the container to make it return to its normal state quickly.

At the same time, wipe the excessive sample on the external wall at the end of tube 1,and remove the rubber pipe from branch 7 and put it on tube 1(See Figure 5).

Install the viscosimeter: Immerse the viscosimeter with sample in a well-prepared constant temperature water bath, fix the viscosimeter on the bracket with a clamp, and immerse a half of the expansion part 2 of capillary viscosimeter into the water bath (Figure 6).

Adjust those three hand screws to observe the viscosimeter and make it vertical.
