Product Overview & Applications

The HM801 is an automatic device specifically designed to quickly and accurately measure the breakdown voltage of transformer insulation oil. Breakdown voltage is an important indicator for evaluating the electrical insulation resistance of insulation oil.Break down voltage is measured by observing at what voltage, sparking string between two electrode immersed in the oil, separated by specific gap. low value of BDV indicates presence of moisture content and conducting substances in the oil.

Application:

1.Power Grid (Substations & Power Plants)

Tests oil in transformers (e.g., 110kV/220kV power transformers) and oil-immersed reactors. These devices rely on oil to insulate high-voltage components; low BDV means oil can't prevent short circuits, risking power outages.

Used during new transformer installation (to verify oil quality) and regular maintenance (to check if oil degrades over time, e.g., due to moisture or impurities).

2.Electrical Equipment Manufacturing

Factories making transformers, oil-immersed capacitors, or voltage regulators use BDV testers to quality-check the transformer oil before filling it into products. Ensures only oil with  (qualified) insulation strength is used, avoiding defective equipment.

3.Renewable Energy (Wind & Solar Power)

Wind turbines and solar power stations use oil-immersed transformers to step up voltage for grid supply. BDV testing prevents oil failure that could stop energy transmission-especially important for remote wind/solar farms where downtime is costly.

4.Railway & Metro Electrical Systems

Railway traction substations (powering trains) and metro electrical systems use oil-filled transformers. BDV tests ensure oil's insulation is reliable, preventing breakdowns that could delay or stop train operations.

5.Industrial Factories (Heavy Industry)

Factories (steel, chemical, mining) use large transformers to power heavy machinery. BDV testing of transformer oil avoids unexpected equipment shutdowns-critical for maintaining production continuity (e.g., a steel mill's transformer failure could halt the entire production line).

6.Transformer Oil Recycling & Supply

Companies that recycle used transformer oil or supply new oil use BDV testers to confirm oil quality. Recycled oil must meet BDV standards before reuse; new oil is tested to ensure it meets industry specs (e.g., IEC 60296) for insulation.

Maintenance & FAQs

Q: What is a Transformer Oil BDV Tester?

A: It's a device that measures the Breakdown Voltage (BDV) of transformer oil-meaning the maximum voltage the oil can handle before it fails to insulate (breaks down). This tells you if the oil is still safe to use in high-voltage equipment.

Q: Why do I need to test transformer oil's BDV?

A: Transformer oil's main job is to insulate high-voltage parts (e.g., in transformers) and cool the equipment. Over time, oil gets contaminated with moisture, dirt, or oxidation-lowering its BDV. A low BDV means the oil can't prevent short circuits, which risks equipment damage or power outages. Testing BDV avoids these issues.

Q: What oil types and voltage ranges does it work with?

A:

Oil types: Most industrial transformer oils (mineral oil, synthetic ester oil-common in power grids, factories).

Voltage ranges: Typically tests up to 80kV (covers standard transformer oil specs; some models go to 100kV for high-voltage equipment).

Q: How does the test work (simplified steps)?

A:

Prepare the oil sample: Take 100–200ml of oil from the transformer (follow safety rules-turn off equipment if needed).

Fill the test cup: Pour the oil into the tester's insulated cup (keep it clean/dry to avoid errors).

Start the test: The tester slowly increases voltage (e.g., 2kV per second) until the oil breaks down (you'll see a small spark).

Get results: The tester automatically records the BDV value (e.g., 45kV). Most standards require a minimum BDV of 30–40kV for transformer oil.

Q:What affects the BDV test results?

A:

Oil contamination: Moisture, dirt, or metal particles in oil lower BDV (the biggest cause of low results).

Test cup condition: A dirty or wet cup can cause false low readings (clean it with alcohol before use).

Temperature: Oil at too low/high temps (below 10°C or above 40°C) may affect results-test at 20–30°C (room temp) if possible.
